Dog Behavior Training - The One Secret That Determines Success or Failure
October 16th, 2005 by admin | Filed under Uncategorized. It seems that while many dog owners have good intentions when it comes to dog behavior training they fail to understand that the goal of dog behavior training is more than achieving any one particular training outcome. While you may get a kick out of your dog’s latest trick, the overall behavior of your dog will be determined by how successfully you achieve the most important aspect of a dog training program which is to establish yourself as the leader. This article will compare the two main dog behavior training methods in common use along with the different ways in which they establish you as the leader.
Proper dog behavior training is essential not only to have your dog follow commands but also to prevent the development of unsocial behavior as your dog reaches maturity. By utilizing an effective dog behavior training strategy you bring about a hierarchy of leadership which reflects that of the hierarchy within a wild dog pack. Your success or failure with training your dog will be determined by your ability to create this primal, instinctive hierarchy. If you are not seen as the leader of the pack by your dog you will not have control over its behavior.
With this outcome in mind let’s take a look at the two main types of dog behavior training, which are:
Reward Training - Reward type training is structured to give the dog a reward when it successfully follows a given command. The result is a positive association in the dog’s mind between following a command and certain rewards such as food. With reward based training you are established as the leader by way of being in control of the food supply, when and only when your command is carried out correctly. This type of training is popular among many military and policing institutions along with many professional dog trainers.
Leash Training - Leash type training tends to have a better adaptation to the task at hand than reward based training owing to the direct control aspect. Leash training works by issuing commands and using the leash to give physical stimulus to follow the command. The dog associates the command with the action resulting in less coercing via the leash required over time. Leash training is very popular and at times can be coupled with a reward to compound the training effect.
Adopting a good dog behavior training strategy will benefit not only your dog but the whole family too as an unruly pet can wreak havoc and cause undue stress on family members. Regardless of which type of dog behavior training you choose from the list above it is important to understand that you must approach it with your outcome being that of instilling yourself as the leader of the pack in the eyes of your dog. Once you have achieved this you will find your time with your pet to be more enjoyable and your dog behavior training efforts will have been well worth the effort.
