Coping with Pet Loss
November 13th, 2007 by admin | Filed under Uncategorized.Pet loss can be a harrowing time for the owner, especially when it’s the death of a dog.
Losing a beloved dog can be as sad as losing a close relative. A dog becomes one of the family and is completely reliant on it’s owner for food, exercise, security and health amongst many other things, so it’s not surprising we grow so attached to our faithful companions and are overcome with grief and sadness when they pass away.
At first pet loss takes some coming to terms with. The loss of a dog can be a particularly difficult time for young children who can’t understand why their friend that they may have grown up with is no longer around. We, as adults, have to stay strong and explain the best way we can what has happened.
Not an easy task when all the time we too are trying to get over the feeling of sadness.
Everywhere you look you see signs of your dog. His bed still in the corner, his toys on the floor, his food dish in the kitchen. Just when you think the pain is easing you open a drawer and there’s his leash, then the pain returns.
All these feelings are completely natural and after a while it becomes much easier to remember the happy times you spent together and smile at some of the trials and tribulations you’ve experienced throughout your dog’s life.
After pet loss many owners need something tangible they can look at to remember their pet by.
A framed photo urn, or a figurine urn may be helpful in coming to terms with the loss of your pet and the satisfaction in knowing that their remains are always close by.
