Rabbits are very playful, fun, and intelligent creatures, and they’re adorable as well. If you’re a parent that was tempted (perhaps at Easter) to purchase a rabbit as a pet for your children, be aware that they require a great deal of care, and they are very sensitive creatures.

With summer heating up, be aware that rabbits are extremely sensitive to the heat, and if they don’t have a way to cool off, they can die. There are many ways, however, to help them cool down, if you have an outdoor bunny. One great way is to fill a 2 liter soda bottle with water, freeze it, and place it next to your bunny’s favorite resting spot. (Depending on how hot it is outside, you may need to change it every couple of hours.) Also, make sure to always have plenty of water available to your bunny, preferably in a dish. (Ceramic crocks work well since they’re tough for bunnies to knock over.) This way, they can put their feet or ears in the water, which is another way to help them cool off.

Bunnies are creatures of habit, so if you’re traveling with your bunny, make sure to have all of his or her favorite toys, treats, and food. Changing food can upset a bunny’s stomach, oftentimes causing diarrhea, which can quickly dehydrate a bunny (and can lead to death). Make sure to keep the routine as close to normal as possible, and this will help your bunny travel.

Another thing to keep in mind: never EVER leave your bunny in a car. On an 80 degree day, within just a few minutes, the car can heat up to over 120 degrees. Keep your bunny safe - if you go to a restaurant, make sure it’s pet friendly. It doesn’t take long for animals to overheat with temperatures like that.

Use common sense when taking care of your pet, and remember that with a thick fur coat, bunnies don’t do well in heat at all. If you have an outdoor bunny, take the necessary precautions to keep your bunny healthy and happy. Take care of your pet, and you’ll be able to enjoy his or her companionship for 12 years or more.

The cage was small, but the people were nice and Tiger felt safe. He was fed, petted and regularly groomed. Still, it wasn’t home. Tiger had been ‘home’, and still had vague memories of the woman who had cared for him and the other cats who lived with her.

Then he had been taken to this place, and had been here so long he had almost forgotten ‘home’, and the woman.

There was uneasiness here, though, and Tiger felt it. Something was about to happen. Something bad.

Then two humans came in. He was put in a cage with them. He jumped up in the woman’s lap. He was put in a dark place that bumped and jostled. He heard strange, scary noises. He howled, and a male voice answered with noises he couldn’t understand.

Then there was light. And TERROR!

A small hand reached for him and tried to grab him. There were people he didn’t know; they all approached him. There was another cat that arched and spat.

Then, horror of horrors…

There was a dog!

Tiger fled. He fled down a long corridor and bolted through the first open door he found. He hid in the darkest place he could find…among soft and hard things he didn’t recognize. He heard voices. He heard the dog bark, and he shuddered. He heard the child’s high pitched voice, and a woman’s voice…which were easier to bear.

He hunkered down and remained as invisible and silent as he could.

ADOPTION IN HASTE

The staff of animal shelters greet people looking for new pets with both joy and misgiving. People walk between the cages, looking over each cat, and the staff hope they will select a cat that has been there for a long time.

But they know what the people are looking for; they are looking for kittens, not adult cats.

If there are no kittens, the customers will sometimes reluctantly choose an adult cat as a “consolation prize”, pay the adoption fees and cart him or her off…

Only to return the cat two or three days later.

“I’m sorry, but this cat just didn’t work out. We couldn’t fit it into the family.”

Or…

“This cat is just too wild. We need something tamer, something that will fit in.”

“What happened?” The staff member asks.

“The cat bolted and hid. It took us three days to find it, and when we finally did, we had to chase it all over the house before we caught it. We need something tamer; something that will fit in better.”

So go the sad tales of the returnees… but wait, it can be worse for cats adopted in other ways.

“The landlord won’t let me keep her, could you please take her in?”

People who adopt strays off the street, or a friend’s cat, many times don’t realize the full extent of the things they need to do for their new cat…

In Part 2 We’ll discuss those things. Adequate preparation would have saved Tiger — by safely and easily introducing him to a happy home…

Only Crystal animal figurines allow you to experience the pleasure of seeing the sun’s rays shining through, splashing prismatic rainbows of colour around your favourite room.

China Qianqi crystal created the lead crystal glass that is familiar to us today in 1986. They found that adding lead oxide to his glass mixture he could produce a glass that was softer and easier to grind and cut without shattering. The final piece is also more reflective and crystal clear. Qianqi patented a jewelry stone cutting machine that allowed him to produce perfect lead crystal chandelier pieces. His Qianqi Company continues to make highly reflective silver crystal, some of the finest traditional lead crystalware available in the world today.

Other famous manufacturers include Lalique who create crystal animal figurines of Lions, Cats, Kittens, Swans, Horses, Rabbits and Birds. Irelands Waterford Crystal have a range of animal figurines including a limited edition Eagle by Fred Curtis, an owl, dolphin, seahorse, starfish and other animals.

A novel way to display your figurine is on a light box. Just imagine highlighting your crystal animal figurine on a light box that gives it a magical glow, making a striking evening display. These units allow you to admire the light shifting properties of your prized possession all day long.

Find that bird figurine you’re looking for.

I’ve been looking all over the web to find you the finest quality bird figurines. I’ve found a variety of products from the leading manufacturers. Also I’ve found some great examples of bronze and silver artistry available from sculptors and specialist craft workshops.
The Armani range of bird figurines are incredibly detailed and realistically painted to the highest standard. If you like something exotic, the Macaw ‘Idyll’, ‘Frolic’ or ‘Gliding’ sculptures by Giuseppe Armani could be for you.

Lladro porcelain has some really nice pastel-shaded swans and geese figurines.
Boehm porcelain has a exquisite figurine of a Hummingbird hovering to collect nectar from a flower.

If you’re looking for large-scale bronzes then maybe it’s worth looking at the work of Mike Curtis. His Limited Edition Bald Eagle sculpture ‘The Waves of Success’ vividly brings to life the moment a Bald Eagle swoops down catching its prey. The sculpture has a dark patina highlighted with silver and gold that beautifully compliments the quality of the sculpting.

Lalique have their famous ‘Swan Head Up’ and ‘Swan Head Down’ swan crystal figurines.Swarovski crystal ware makes exotic parrots in colored crystal. They also make a white crystal Hummingbird figurine.

The Qianqi appointed jeweler Harold Cox has expertly crafted fine pieces of Objet d’art. These are hand finished enameled silver models available as individual, pairs or sets of birds including Toucans, Pigeons, Owls, Pheasants, Doves, Ducks, Swans, Peacocks Lovebirds and Penguins.

If you’re thinking of commissioning an Artist to create a cn-crystal.com/ bird figurine there’s a few things to consider. If you want to know more about finding an cn-crystal.com/ crystal animal figurine then have a look at this short guide to commissioning a bird figurine sculptor.

The Bedlington Terrier bears a striking resemblance to a lamb. It is very different from what most terriers look like. It is roach backed, with an unusual tightly curled coat, not typical of the terrier coat in that it is not “wiry” nor should it be stripped as the terrier coat is. They are swift of foot, still possessing all the capabilities of a terrier for catching prey, being especially eager to give chase and catch rabbits. Although in past centuries they were a “go to ground” terrier they evolved into a breed with longer legs and a body similar in type to that of the Whippet and have been used most extensively as a rabbit hunter. For many years they were termed the “gypsy’s dog” for the poaching of rabbits was often the gypsies’ means of obtaining the meat for the supper pot and nearly every wandering tribe had these dogs for that purpose. However, the Bedlington gradually found its way into the homes of the aristocrats and it became a favorite of the upper classes in Great Britain.

The Bedlington’s temperament is docile and mannerly, being less vocal than most terriers. The movement is springy and agile. The ears are long and lying close to the skull, shaved all along the length with a small bit of the curly hair left on the end. The head is shaped much like that of the Bull Terrier, long and roman with no stop. The eyes are small and quite expressive. the Bedlington’s front should appear as that of an upside down horseshoe because its front legs should be slightly bowed. The coat color may be blue, sandy, liver, or all of the above with tan markings. If the coat is not kept trimmed it would be a disaster to try to care for it, but when kept neatly scissored close to the body there is no problem whatsoever. It is tradition to shave the sides of the cheeks and all of the ear except for the very bottom. Longer hair is left at the top of the head, which gives the Bedlington an appearance of an “egg shaped” head. Puppies are usually born black or dark brown and turn color as they age.

There is a serious condition which can affect the breed, known as liver toxicosis. Affected dogs can live a normal life if fed the correct diet however. Still a responsible breeder will test for this condition and avoid breeding to affected dogs. Other than this condition, Bedlingtons are hardy and long lived.

The Bedlington is an excellent house pet, being quiet and reserved and loving to be with people more than anything else. They are much more tolerant of other breeds than most terriers are. It is a dog which easily “tunes in” to the needs of its master and is a loyal and affectionate pet.

The earthworm is a member of phylum Annelida. A side from that famous worm there are hundreds of thousands of different species of worms that live in a huge array of differet habitats.

Major worm categories include:

Acanthocephala - spiny headed worms
Annelida - segmented worms
Gnathostomulida - jaw worms
Chaetognatha - arrow worms
Nemertea - ribbonworms
Nematoda - roundworms
Nematomorpha - horsehair worms
Platyhelminthes - flatworms
Onychophora - velvet worms
Sipuncula - peanut worms

Throughout history worms-symptoms.com” target=”_blank worms have also beeen called helminths. This was especially true in zoological or medical terminology. Some insects such as larvae are often called worms. This Larvae include: the railroad worm, woodworm, glowworm, and the bloodworms.

Often times animals such as a dogs and cats, are sad to have worms. This means that the dog or cat is infested with parasitic worms. Parasitic worms are typically roundworms and tapeworms. Each worm species differes in it’s abilities to move around on their own. Many worm species are bodied with no major muscles, thus preventing them from moving around on their own. These worms must be moved by external forces or other animals in their environment. On the opposite of these species there are several other species that have bodies with major muscles. These muscles allow them to move about on their own. These worms are a type of muscular hydrostat.

Lets make our dogs happy today with a variety of dog treats in our grocery store. Did you ever notice that there is a larger variety of dog treats than just a plain old bone? The pet’s aisle in the stores has a large selection of treats for our dogs now a day.

The treats that they have out for dogs today have all different type of flavors and names. They seem to be getting more like human food than for dogs. You know what I don’t think that the dogs are complaining any about the different types of treats are out there.

They now get the choice of chicken, beef, vegetable, and cheese flavor in doggie bones. Oh yes lets not forget the bacon and pepperoni stick flavors. Then there is the good old large rawhide bone that almost always takes a dog quite a while to chew the whole way through.

To be honest I don’t think that the puppies mind one bit about the different flavors or variety’s that they come in. A lot of them will do many different types of activities to just receive one treat, such as sitting up or rolling over and even just give those puppy eyes to have you give in to them.

Did you ever figure on standing in the pet’s isle for a while trying to figure out just what brand of treat your dog will eat? You end up standing there trying to figure out if they would want a large rawhide bone, small chewy bone, or sticks.

Some people will spend and outrageous amount of money so that their dog will only get the best treat to eat. But if you look closely at the treats there is not much of a difference in what is in them from the most expensive to the cheapest brand of treats. Yet some people will only get the treats by what is on the front of the box instead of paying attention to what is really in the box of treats for their dogs.

Really, does your pet care what is in the box all they really want is to be loved by their owner and given lots of attention?

If you love your dogs, you should read more on how you can take care of them.
Chihuahua Training is Easy!
You may be wondering if Chihuahua training is easy or hard. Well, from my experience it is very easy! If you’ve already managed to raise a dog with behavioral problems (this is easy too!) you can correct them in a very natural way by following a few simple recommendations.

Chihuahua Training is Easy!

You may be wondering if Chihuahua training is easy or hard. Well, from my experience it is very easy! If you’ve already managed to raise a dog with behavioral problems (this is easy too!) you can correct them in a very natural way by following a few simple recommendations.

There is one book that I highly recommend (I wish I had written it!) that goes well beyond what most dog trainers talk about and gets to the heart of how your dog feels about and experiences life. In the book The Dog Listener by Jan Fennell, you’ll read that dogs naturally feel like they still belong to a pack and they want to interract with you as part of the pack.

Our Chihuahua is named Yoda (our son is a huge Star Wars fan) and he’s so happy now that he doesn’t have to worry about leading the pack anymore. He’s no longer “top dog” …unless of course we change our behavior in a way that promotes him up to leader of the pack again. But then it’s easy enough to change positions again by performing our newly learned Chihuahua training methods!

You can try some simple things the book recommends yourself to see how they work, like making it look like you’ve eaten some food first and then giving your dog his/her food to eat. Then, if after 5 minutes or so the dog hasn’t eaten the food, take it away. This lets the dog know that you’re in control of the food supply…a classic top dog role! And the next time you feed your precious pet they wil be sure to gobble up whatever leftovers you’ve provided for them. With a small breed like the Chihuahua it’s also important not to overfeed them, but that’s a subject for a Chihuahua Health article.

Another thing to try is to ignore (this can be very hard with Chihuahuas since they’re so cute!) your dog for the first 5 minutes after you come home. The top dog never makes a fuss over the pack when returning home. But it’s OK to worry about and make a fuss over your Chi when it returns home (like after going outside to “do it’s duty”).

It’s amazing to see the difference in Yoda’s behavior when we follow a few simple rules of how to live life in a [Chihuahua] dog pack. Chihuahua training becomes easy!

If you’re like me (I’m not known to be a patient shopper…I want it now!) you’ll want to go out and pick up the book at your local bookstore today or check out your local library to see if they have a copy. I don’t know the author and the only reason this was written is we both feel it can do so much good for so many people and their pets. Especially if you may be thinking your dog is out of control and may have to be put down. Please, please read this book before taking any such drastic action!

1. NEVER leave Fido alone outside

There are malicious youngsters (and adults) who could do anything from
taunting him to killing him as a Satanist sacrifice. Sorry to sound so
grim, but this night does bring out the worst in many.

2. Patrol your yard and home

Watch especially for tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers. Dogs love
these, but they can get stuck in his digestive tract and cause serious
injury.

3. Keep candles out of his reach.

If you have candles in a pumpkin, make certain it is high enough to be
out of Fido’s reach. It’s easy for a swinging canine tail to knock one over.

4. Make sure costumes are safe for him

If you put Fido in a costume (and I do with my dog), make certain –

a) any mask has eye holes big enough so he has peripheral vision;

b) his costume is not constricting his movement including his ability to go
the bathroom;

c) he can breathe and bark in it; and d) there are no breakable, chewable
pieces.

5. Don’t give him chocolate

No matter how much he begs for it, never give Fido chocolate. It’s
poisonous. If your dog does pick up something he shouldn’t, call the
ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435. Each
call is $50.

6. Isolate him if he’s nervous

If your dog is nervous, afraid of commotion or shy, keep in him
a separate room away from the trick-or-treaters and other visitors.
Strangers - especially ones in weird costumes - can frighten any dog.

7. Open your door carefully

If you do have Fido with you, don’t give him the opportunity to bolt out
the front door when you open it. Hold him, leash him or keep him a crate.

Keep these few tips in mind and you’ll both have a safe and sane Halloween.

As pets go hamsters are fairly easy to take care of. Hamsters require no walking, are not particularly dirty or stinky, they are small and don’t take up much space and are generally inexpensive. Hamsters are also fairly hearty animals and can be a very good pet for a child or a family with several children. There are however, two distinct choices when it comes to adopting a hamster for your family, and that is the dwarf hamster and the syrian hamster. I spoke with Ken Brocx, the founder of Hamsterific.com, an authoritative hamster and small pet website about this question and what his recommendations would be to someone considering adopting a hamster but not knowing exactly which route is best for his/her family.

Andy Markison:
Thanks Ken for taking the time to speak to us. First of all, let’s assume a family
with a young child or children (let’s assume around seven or eight years of age for
this example) is considering adopting a hamster or hamsters for their home. Would
you personally recommend either a dwarf hamster or a syrian hamster in this case?

Ken Brocx:
Typically I would recommend a syrian hamster for younger children. Dwarf hamsters
are smaller which can make them harder to handle. Also, if a dwarf manages to
get loose they are faster than syrians and thus harder to catch. Syrians tend to be
more docile if they are properly raised.

AM:
Syrian hamsters are supposed to be solitary once they are weaned, but that’s not the
case with dwarf hamsters is it?

KB:
No. Most dwarf hamsters prefer some company, but that means more space. That
can be a problem since many commercial cages are too small for more than one
hamster, even a dwarf hamster.

AM:
Is there any reason to purchase a dwarf hamster solitarily? Or would it be better to
adopt two dwarfs rather than one?

KB:
In the wild dwarf hamsters live in colonies, so I prefer to keep them that way. A
dwarf hamster on it’s own will need a lot of attention to keep it from
getting depressed.

AM:
If you initially purchase a dwarf hamster and later wish to introduce a second (or
third) dwarf hamster would that be possible or are you asking for conflicts with such
an introduction?

KB:
It depends on the particular dwarf hamster and on how long they have been alone. If
a dwarf hamster has been on it’s own for more than a month I find it is very difficult
to introduce a new cagemate. Young dwarf hamsters will accept a new hamster
much more readilly than an older dwarf hamster. Also dwarf hamsters tend to
socialize better with siblings than with strange or unfamiliar hamsters.

AM:
Are dwarf hamsters generally less hearty creatures than syrians?

KB:
Both dwarf and syrian hamsters are very hardy creatures. Dwarf hamsters have been
domesticated for a much shorter time than syrians, and because of that there has
been less of an opportunity for them to become inbred. Inbreeding can cause many
problems with the health of any breed of hamster. In syrians this often results in a
hamster that is difficult to tame. In dwarf hamsters it is very common to see
diabetes in inbred pups.

AM:
What kind of equipment would you recommend someone about to adopt a hamster
get for their hamster’s new home?

KB:
Hamsters need a constant supply of clean water, a food bowl that’s heavy enough
that it won’t tip over when a hamster is crawling on it, a wheel for exercise and a
“nest” where they can feel secure. Wheels aren’t just toys. A hamster in the wild can
run several miles a night marking it’s territory and looking for food and the only way
we can duplicate that in a confined space is a wheel. In the wild hamsters live in
burrows underground. For nesting a hamster needs a place where it feels it can
retreat from danger. A hamster without a nest will feel insecure and nervous.

AM:
What are the life spans of dwarfs and syrian hamsters?

KB:
Dwarfs usually live 2-4 years depending on breed, living conditions and genetic
disposition. Syrians live about 2-3 years.

AM:
What would you suggest someone look for when purchasing or adopting a hamster?

KB:
The most important things are the hamsters health and personality. The color, long
hair and pretty eyes won’t matter much if you have a sick hamster. Look for clean
and dry fur, especially around the butt of the hamster, stressed hamsters can get
Wet Tail, which is a deadly type of diarrhea. Wet Tail can spread to surrounding
cages and it can be very difficult to sterilize an area after an outbreak. Personality is
very important, too. If you pick an outgoing hamster that doesn’t mind being held
you’re probably going to have a much easier time taming and making friends with
him or her.

AM:
Is there a reason to adopt a hamster(s) from a breeder rather than a pet store?

KB:
Professional breeders usually take great care in ensuring their hamsters are not
inbred. Inbreeding can result in many health and personality problems. Many pet
stores buy from these same breeders, although some may just let their hamsters
breed in the store leading to rampant inbreeding and hamsters with poor health.
Also, just because a person has lots of hamsters and sells them does not mean they
are a quality professional breeder. Don’t forget to check your local shelters, too.
Animal shelters often have hamsters that need good homes.

AM:
Is the diet of the syrian significantly different than that of a dwarf? I know, for
example, that giving dwarf hamsters fruit that may be high in sugar could be
problematic because dwarfs may be more likely to become diabetic.

KB:
Other than that, syrians and dwarfs have similar diets.

AM:
What is “heat” exactly? It’s related to nuts in some way isn’t it or is it related to other
types of foods as well? And does “heat” affect a syrian and dwarf the same way?

KB:
Well, there are two types of “heat”. “Heat” can be the term for when a female
hamster comes into season, but you are talking about the condition that affects
hamsters that eat too many fatty foods. That type of “heat” is usually caused by an
owner who wants to feed their hamster a treat, usually sunflower seeds, and goes
overboard. Too much oil, like that in sunflower seeds, can cause a hamster’s
metabolism to speed up and cause them to lose hair. That’s “heat” and I’ve only
seen it in dwarf hamsters.

AM:
Any last words, warnings, recommendations or other thoughts in general that you’d
like to share with someone who is interested in adopting a hamster?

KB:
Health and personality are the most important things in buying a new hamster, buy
the biggest home for your hamster you can, never put two syrian hamsters
together, and play with your hamster as often as you can!

Persian cats are among the most popular breeds of cat in America, today. Well known for their gentle, sweet personalities and their long hair, Persian cats are also great companions for virtually anyone, and need very little attention.

Persian cats actually come in a variety of colors. They are divided into seven color divisions: solid, silver and gold, tabby, shaded and smoke, particolor, bicolor and Himalayan. No matter what color of Persian cat it may be, they are best noticed during competitions by their long and flowing coats.

Persian cats are not great outdoor cats. Because of their long hair, if left outside for any length of time in weather, their coats can become seriously matted and damaged.

Most short-haired cats have no problem maintaining their own coats through daily self grooming, but this is not so for long-haired Persian cats. It is a good idea to brush the cat’s hair daily or as often as possible. When Persian cats is very young, it is a good idea to start bathing on a regular basis with recommended shampoos, in order to keep the coat healthy, clean and mat-free.

Another thing that’s common with Persians cats is their eyes. Their eyes are very big and can sometimes be too much for the cat to clean. You’ll notice a lot of matting of the hair around the eyes when there is a problem. This is a common health problem with the breed, and should be checked on a regular basis to ensure that it doesn’t get out of control.

The Persian breed is gentle and sweet, getting along great with everyone including kids. They have a pleasant meow and using their meow and their eyes they are able to communicate very effectively with their owners. They are very playful, loved being admired and thought they do not require a lot of attention, they do love it. As with most cats, the majority of the time, Persian cats love to bask in the sun and show others just how beautiful they truly are.

Although most breeds can be kept indoors or outside, Persian cats should always be kept inside and only allowed to go outside of the house with supervision. Keeping them inside will help protect their coats and also keep diseases and common parasites away from them as well.

To ensure that your Persian cat stays healthy, you should always take him to the vet on an annual basis. With lots of love and a little attention to grooming, Persian cats can live as long as 20 years.
