Owning a puppy is a responsibility and there are many things to consider before you buy one. You will need to take into account your lifestyle future and present, your children and other members of your household. Make sure you have the time and personality to properly care for your puppy and also can afford to pay for quality food and veterinarian visits.

Puppies can vary in prices tremendously depending on the availability and the popularity of the breed. You can expect to pay anywhere from $40 to $700 for a puppy depending if you get it at from an animal shelter or from a well known breeder. Or if you are lucky, you may be able to get a puppy for free from a relative or friend.

In the case, where you are acquiring a puppy for breeding or for show, you will probably pay a premium. Smaller dog breeds are more expensive as there are usually only one or two pups per litter. Some popular small dog breeds are the Chihuahua, Chow Chow, Pug, Pekingese, Bulldog, Shi Tzu, English Toy Spaniel, and Japanese Chin.

Dogs that are not classified by the American Kennel Club (AKC) are usually more expensive and you can expect to pay more for them. Many foreign breeds are not readily available in the USA, and if they are only in small quantities. Some people go to great length to get an imported puppy. You will have to go through a lot of paper work to bring your puppy into the United States, check out the latest laws to make you are willing to go for it.

Not everyone wants to be a breeder or have a show dog. More likely, you are probably looking for a companion or a puppy for your kids to run around with in the yard. Then just bring the family to the nearest pet shop and choose the puppy that make s you smile.

As a dog owner you can enjoy many benefits, from the entertainment value of having a lively and alert little pet around the home to the companionship of having a loving and reliable dog at your side. However, for many people dog ownership doesn’t seem possible, simply because of allergies that can cause terrible discomfort for the potential dog owner.

Many people suffer from allergies to cats and dogs for various reasons, but if you are an allergy sufferer and feel that you are missing out on the joys of dog ownership, all is not lost. There are a number of dog breeds that are ideal for those that suffer from dog related allergies, and will prove to be loving, loveable, and entertaining pets.

Why do people suffer from allergies to dogs?

People that are allergic to many dog breeds are actually allergic to the dander that is produced. Dander is the dry flakes of skin from the dog that can become airborne, and is known to contribute towards allergic reactions, causing symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, and respiratory problems.

Although there is no dog breed that is going to be totally free from dander there are certain breeds that produce far less dander than others, which means fewer allergic symptoms for the owner.

Small dog breeds for allergy sufferers

Bichon Frise: This is a cute, alert looking, small dog with a beautiful curly coat and lively expression. The curly coat of this breed means that there is less shedding, and this makes the breed suitable for those suffering from mild allergies.

Chinese Crested: This is a unique looking small dog with smooth skin and a crest of hair on its head. Because of its lack of bodily hair, this breed has nothing to shed, and this makes it ideal for allergy sufferers.

Maltese: The cute, small, and lively Maltese is a dog that boasts a beautiful, glamorous white coat. Although you need to groom this breed regularly, the Maltese does not shed a great deal and does not produce much dander.

Toy Poodle: The beautiful Toy Poodle is another breed that will need regular grooming to help make the most of its gorgeous coat, but produces little dander and does not shed much, making this a suitable breed for allergy sufferers.

Miniature Schnauzer: Another breed that sheds little and produces little dander, the Miniature Schnauzer is a lively and loveable small dog that should suit those that suffer from pet allergies.

Why these dogs are suitable for allergy sufferers

As you will see from the descriptions, all of the small dog breeds listed above are ones that do not shed much hair, and produce far less dander than many other dog breeds. Most people that suffer from pet allergies are actually reacting to the effects of the hair or dander and not to the animal itself, which is why these dog breeds could prove ideal for people that are allergic to dogs.

Tropical fish includes fish around the world living in tropical environments including salt water and fresh water species. They are popular fish in aquariums because of their bright colors. Tropical also refers to tropical climate wherein the climate is warm or moist all throughout the year integrated by abundant vegetation.

Aquarium is an enclosed clear-sided container made of high strength plastic or constructed glass for keeping or raising animals and plants for research and observation. The ecosystem of the species is copied on smaller scale controlling environmental factors.

Tropical fish being put in the aquarium should be properly taken care of by regular monitoring of the fish and aquarium conditions by checking the waters for bacteria, parasite or fungi occurrences. There are ways on how to determine if the tropical fish are sick.

- Fish scales inspection. Examine for any discoloration, growths or wounds. Scales that is missing is a fighting indication.

- Observation of the fish respiratory rates. Slower or faster rate than normal is a sign of problem.

- Fish eyes clarity checking. Blood or cloudiness should not be present.

- Observation of the fish abnormal behavior such as unusual swimming pattern or sluggishness.

- Veterinarian consultation for any fish abnormalities being observed.

Aquarium serves as the new habitat of your tropical fish so it should be maintained regularly. The procedures are easy protecting the fish and plants lives.

- Regular checking of the tank to ensure that dying or dead fish is not present.

- Observation of all the fish individually for behavioral patterns familiarization so that it is easier to determine a sick fish in the future.

- Feed your fish with one-day intervals using diet variations.

- Replace the evaporated water on the tank with dechlorinated water.
- Once a week, removed 5 to 10 percent of the tank water replacing it fresh dechlorinated water. Unwanted chemicals in the tank are diluted helping the tanks internal environment similar to tap water.

- Algae scraping from the walls of the tank done once a week.

- Filter pads checking every two weeks cleaning or replacing them if necessary.

- Water testing done every two weeks. Water change is done after one day.

- Ammonia, nitrate, pH levels or nitrite checking done every two weeks.

- Drain off the debris from the gravel done once a month.

Always keep track the chemical contents of your aquarium and schedule maintenance.

I am currently the proud ownee of two all American, genuine CATs. Both are just less than a year old. Roxie was a gift for my daughter’s 6th birthday but she proudly calls me hers. (She would have it no other way). And Turbo, who started out as my son’s stray rescue kitten from under our long parked Honda, has turned into his namesake. A compact powerhouse with a purr that could shake windows, Turbo finds me the coziest place to nap. My two babies. My two toe assassins.
Over the years I have realized that cats are perfect for someone like me. Busy, lazy, intense, quiet. All at differing bursts. Anything that can give you that much intense love and attention and walk away like they don’t really care anyway, commands my respect. I am sure you are the same. Tranquility that bursts into acrobatics all over the flicker of a shadow (”I am sure I saw something…”) Cats are indeed my reflection on many different levels.

Actually, this is a reunion for me and cats. I had cats all my life except for a stretch of eight years. (Has it really been that long!?) None, except the ones in my head. Not until I began to express them in my art. Have you ever heard of the book “The Purpose Driven Life”?

-This sounds really strange but is true. A little over 2 years ago I had two joint surgeries (unrelated) both to left side extremities. One wrist and one knee. I had eight weeks off work and received that book from someone I have never heard of in Missouri. I started reading through the book, wondering what it was and why I had been sent it. At the same time I was mulling over a request that my sister had made of me some time before to do a sculpture of her cat. Thinking of how I would go about creating the sculpture. While that was going on, her cat had to be euthanized and then I guess everything kind of came together for me.

To understand what was happening, you must understand that for YEARS I had floundered around without any direction for my artistic skills. I had even dropped out of college because– I did not want to be an art teacher or a graphic artist. I had no idea what to do with my skill if I could even I could really own it as that. Everyone else told me I was talented but I had not found a calling; I did not believe in myself. That was in *ahem* 1991. I dabbled in drawings over the years, much as I had all my life. Everyone loved them, but I was not satisfied. About three years ago, after much encouragement from my supporting family, I took a ‘continuing education’ class that was a satellite of our community college courses in pottery of all things. Just something that I had never tried. I fell in love with the mud! Clay was everything that I couldn’t express. Somehow I was able to coax the feeling out of it that paper could never give. Then I went from making pots to sculpting. Somehow it makes sense looking back; my mother and grandmother used to have a ceramic shop of their own. I didn’t have much interest at the time because I was young; but I was there every day with the dust and the smell of greenware and the firing kilns. It must have sunk into my core.

When my sister asked me to do a sculpture of her cat, it just made sense. My sister was crushed when her cat died. She had had that cat since we were both in high school. When I found out that she had had her cat cremated, it only made sense that she would be able to place the ashes inside the cat I created in her likeness. So my purpose, as it were, was revealed. Why shouldn’t everyone that loved their cat be able to memorialize them the same way? So I began the journey of the last few years. Now finally realizing that potential, I have a purpose for my art. Cats that are art, that are sculptures, that are urns, that are art. It lifts me every time I think of it. The healing that it can bring for cat owners. To see a likeness of their cat. Not a box or a jar with their cat’s name. Something that can be placed in their favorite sunny spot or wear their collar.
I have toiled and collected and gathered and spent. I have sweated blood and tears and now I am there. Standing on the brink. With a ball of clay in one hand and a computer mouse dangling in the other. I taught myself how to build a website and opened up for the prying eyes of the public web. To be crawled over by search engine “spiders” and Googled. But– there is purpose behind this I remind myself. And as if on cue, here is Roxie. Jumped into my lap; purring and reminding me that it is worth it.

If your best friend is a Boxer, Doberman, Great Dane, Schnauzer, or Pit Bull…not to mention several other breeds, you may be trying to decide whether or not to put the pup through ear cropping.

There are several important things to consider, first, do you have a veterinarian nearby that performs the procedure? Fewer and fewer do, it seems. Do some research to find out who in your area does. There is a lot of follow up care and having the vet nearby is important. Most vets do not want to be responsible for follow up of this procedure if they are unfamiliar with the surgery.

Second, before you start down this road, make sure your puppy has had his vaccines and deworming procedures started. Make sure he is on a good quality food and is over all very healthy. These things will help him heal faster than if his system is otherwise compromised.

Ear cropping is usually done around 9 to 11 weeks of age. Any later and the ears may not want to stand. You are trying to find that time when the puppy is old enough to handle the surgery and anesthesia well, but young enough that the cartilage is not set in their ears yet.

The surgery is done by surgically removing a portion of the ear and suturing the incision then placing the ear in an upright position in some form of rack. Often a tall paper cup or aluminum splint. The ears will need to heal for days before the sutures are removed.

Follow up care is undoubtedly more difficult and time consuming than the surgery itself and is vital to the ultimate outcome.

Leaving sutures longer than 7 days can result in scaring along the ear edge. The ears will still have quite a few scabs at this stage and may be very senstive and bleed yet. It now becomes more difficult to keep the ears in the rack.

As the ears heal they itch and drive the pup crazy. Dilute betadine and Neosporin can help the healing process and relieve some of the itching, however it can also loosen the tape used to secure the ears so stay well away from the tape if you can.

A mild sedative may even be advisable for this stage of the healing as the puppy may be quite uncomfortable.

Find out the vets office hours for future reference. The ears are very susceptible to coming down from now until they stand.
NEVER try to tape the ears up yourself unless you have been well educated how to do so by your vet.

If you tape around the raw edge of the ear, or if you tape too tightly you can actually cut off the circulation to the ear very quickly, causing it to die and fall off. It happens. There is no repair for an ear that has died and fallen off.

The ears will stay in the rack for 17- 21 days until they are fully healed and starting to stand on their own. From here they will be wrapped in soft cotton wraps with tape and will stay like this until they stand. Typically your vet will want to check on them every 10-14 days if the pup leaves the bandages alone that long.

If, or rather when, your puppy gets his or her ears out of whatever apparatus they are in, it is vital that you get him to the vet within an hour or so. The longer the ears stay down, the longer they will take to stand.

It may be a good idea to have a crash course in the do’s and don’ts of emergency taping in case you have a mishap over a weekend or holiday.

A breed with a short ear, like a Pit Bull or a Schnauzer will have quicker results. Dobermans, Danes, and Boxers will take longer because they have more ear to fight gravity. Post surgery healing and after care play a big role in the length of time it takes to have a finished ear, but genetics as much as anything is the biggest influence.

Some ears will stand quickly, others may take months. The longest I have known of was my own dog, Dharma. She is a beautiful Boxer who took 10 months for the desired result. Most take closer to 3 or 4 months total.

Be sure you are ready for this undertaking. It is a lot to go through for you and the pup but it does create a beautiful profile and a very distinct look specific to just your breed of choice.

A crucial and beneficial task to undertake with your dog is to train it properly. Training allows you to connect with your dog through communication. This connection is vital in directing your dog to follow your commands, as well as establishing a good lifelong relationship. Training is not the panacea for all behavior issues, but it’s a good foundational start.

Dogs are definitely social beings, but behave like wild animals when not provided the proper training. This means your dog will bite you, fight with other dogs, dig in the yard, bark too much, damage your property and dirty your home. These canine behavioral issues are actually normal dog activities, but the timing and the subject of focus is all wrong. To illustrate this, a dog must do its business outside, but does not wait and goes on the rug instead. Perhaps the dog does not just bark at a suspicious prowler, but barks the entire night instead. Or, the dog prefers to gnaw on your shoes instead of the toys you’ve provided. The critical message you must impart to your dog is that these behaviors need to be redirected to the proper time and place.

Training establishes the “pecking order” too. Your dog shows respect to you just through simple compliance for commands like “sit” and “come.” However, you and your dog should derive rewards and fun times from training. Proper training makes living together a pleasurable and rewarding experience. The well-trained canine actually can be given more freedom and is a much more confident pet as compared to a dog with no boundaries on behavior.

Your home is the venue where you should do the training. Don’t pick an area with a lot of distractions for your dog; it should be an area your dog is used to. Once you are confident that your dog has mastered a few compliance commands, you can then move on to different locations. Remember that you want people who visit to see your dog comply with all your commands. What’s the point if your dog sits on command in the backyard, but does not do so when visitors are at your home? The big test of dog training success is to see your dog respond to commands in public places.

Dog obedience training lessons should be short on time, but long on results. Scheduling long and meticulous dog training sessions will only become tedious and unproductive in the end. The best way to schedule dog training is to integrate it within day-to-day activities. Your dog training sessions should be structured so that both you and your pet derive benefit from it. Integrate dog training sessions during activities your dog loves, and your dog will associate those favorite activities with the training. From your dog’s perspective, it should see that everything is training and training is everything.

You will find that the most profound theme in that dog training should be rewarding to your dog for the appropriate responses. The speed at which the dog learns is directly associated with the frequency of rewards. This means that practice will involve rewarding good behaviors in quick succession. Never take your dog’s good behavior lightly and make sure that praise is given quickly. If a dog barks too much, it always gets attention, but we fail to notice our dog acting properly at times. It is human nature to focus on the bad behaviors and ignore the good. But with dogs, a system of proper actions and quick rewards are vital for the prevention of future problems.

Dogs get exasperated too when all they hear is, “No, get down, bad dog!” The constant nagging also has a tendency to make a dog apathetic to your commands. If there is a consistent system of rewards for appropriate behavior, then when your dog behaves badly and gets scolded, it has a greater impact. Remember to not just scold your dog, but show what you desire from it and immediately reward the behavior when done right. For example, you can show your dog its own toys right after scolding it for chewing on some household item. You can get excited about the dog’s toys and give a reward when the dogs play with them.

The tone of your voice, if used properly, is all that is needed for correcting bad behavior. Stick to reprimands that are concise, short and quick, and avoid nagging. Do not scold your dog if you have not caught the wrong behavior right away, as it will have little meaning after some time has passed. Late reprimands do little good and can even worsen the wrong behavior in your dog. Inappropriate reprimanding can make your dog aggressive, timid, afraid of the raised hand, apt to chew and bark excessively.

Whether you own a Traditional or Modern Siamese cat the care for Siamese cat is the same. The Siamese cat is low-maintenance as far as special care considerations are concerned. They are not delicate, are active, and have good appetites (they are not known to overeat and become obese even when extra food is provided). Follow the cat’s cues as to how much food it requires in a day. If there is extra food left over in the dish after your cat has finished eating, try putting in less the next day (equivalent to the left over amount), or if your cat seems to be looking for more food – try adding a small amount until he or she is satisfied.

When you care for Siamese cat an important fact to keep in mind is that they reach maturity quite early on (sometimes as early as 5 months). As it is not recommended to spay your cat until it is 6 months old, you may have a month when your female cat goes into heat. Be patient, it will pass and be sure she does not escape out the front door or she will probably come back home pregnant.

Keep in mind that the care for Siamese cat does involve dealing with cat fur and shedding. The Siamese cat sheds approximately twice a year; you can mitigate the amount of fur around your home by brushing your cat. This is a ritual that the cat will enjoy, can be relaxing for you, the owner, and lessens the amount of fur that will end up throughout your home. The Siamese cat is classified as short-haired, so brushing can be limited to two times per week.

In Pennsylvania, which is a large state with lots of rural land, it can be difficult to find a good obedience school where you can get your furry companion cared for and trained the way you want. Instead of driving hours to have strangers teach your dog, perhaps you should consider being your own dog training service PA. By following a few simple tips, you can be on your way to getting your dog obedience trained from the comfort of your own home.

Being the Alpha Dog

If the dog you are looking to train is a puppy, the first thing you need to do is establish yourself as the alpha dog in the pack. Once the puppy knows that you are the leader, the obedience training becomes much easier than it was before. This, in fact, is a great reason not to drop your little one off at a dog training PA school where they will be the alpha dogs, not you.

If you have a grown dog, teaching him or her that you are the leader is still imperative, though it may not be as easy. At least early on, make sure you are the one feeding and caring for the dogs. Once they see that you are providing for the pack, you will quickly become the alpha dog and the training gets easier right away.

Nothing is Free

A concept taught in most dog training PA services is the idea that nothing is free. You can use this same idea in your home as you teach your dog obedience. Reward with treats, but never give them for just any reason. When you allow the dog to understand that treats, and nothing else for that matter, are not free then he will always be looking to please you. This method is as close to universal as anything in dog obedience training.

Be Consistent

If you are going to be your own dog training PA facility, then you need to adhere to the consistency such places will give your canine companion. Be sure that you do your activities at similar times each day. In addition, do not accept behaviors that are not acceptable and do not reward when a reward is not due. The consistency will help your training as well as your activities go much more smoothly overall.

Training your dog at home can really save you on travel, especially in a state like Pennsylvania where many of the facilities are so far away. In addition, you will save on money and time. However, perhaps the most important part of training your dog at home is that you get to bond with your pet.

A dog suffering from separation anxiety can cause many problems for you, your dog, and your neighbors. These dogs love their owners and they hate being away from them. You probably give your dog all the love that you can, but when you are away they become little destroyers who chew your shoes, urinate on your furniture, and bark for hours. Some breeds of dogs are predisposed to this behavior. If you are looking into getting a dog and you know that you are frequently gone, you will want to avoid breeds that have dependency problems. Many dogs that were not weaned properly will also develop a dependency on humans at an early age.

There are various symptoms of separation anxiety and it is important to note that most of these actions occur as soon as you leave your house in the mornings. Symptoms of separation anxiety include:

•	Scratching at doors and windows (your doors will look like they tried dig through them)
•	Urinating on the carpet and furniture
•	Chewing and destroying furniture, clothes, shoes, bedding, etc.
•	Excessive barking, whining and howling
•	Chewing or excessively licking themselves
•	Follows you throughout your house and demands constant attention

If your dog only exhibits these behaviors while you are gone, the dog is most likely suffering from separation anxiety. Most dogs will act fine when you are with them. They will generally only be destructive for the first thirty minutes you are gone, but may continue to howl, bark, and whine all day long. These dogs will not benefit from punishment, as they are suffering from an anxiety disorder and not intentional bad behavior. They will not be able to associate punishment with their acts, as it may have been hours since they were being destructive.

Your veterinarian may be able to direct you in how to deal with dog separation anxiety. Many dogs with severe cases may require anxiety medication. They will also require behavior modification training. The combination of medication and training is the best. Behavior modification training will teach you how to react to your dog and his problems, as well.

In changing your dog’s behavior, you will first want to avoid making a big deal about leaving and coming home. Many dogs are able to recognize when their owners are leaving and their anxiety will begin to build. Avoid saying anything to your dog as you leave and come back home. Try to ignore them for as long as possible when you come home. This will help make your arrival and departures low-key events with minimal excitement. Try to find what triggers your dog’s behavior. Notice your dog’s reactions to you picking up your keys, purse, and briefcase. After determining what sets your dog off, repeat those actions without leaving your house, as this will help to desensitize your dog.

Be sure that your dog is receiving plenty of exercise to reduce his amount of energy. Start by gradually leaving your dog for short periods of time and then extend those time limits gradually. You may also want to give your dog toys that hold treats so that he will be busy for hours. You can give these to him as you walk out the door in the mornings. Crating your dog does not generally help, as they spend their time trying to escape and destroying their crates. You may also choose to leave a radio or television on, as the noise helps to calm these dogs. The process is a long adjustment period but, with work, your dog will become less dependent on you and less stressed.

Since Mother Nature provides the dog with its own outer fur coat you might think why bother with anything else. Little dogs, however, lose their body heat more quickly than the bigger dogs. Small, short-haired dogs like the Chihuahuas and Miniature Pinschers have almost nothing in the way of nature to keep them warm in colder temperatures. For these dogs it is like a necessity to provide them with something extra for those cold, blistery days outside. For other breeds, such as a thick-coated Shih Tzu it can be entirely optional, but will also help the smaller sizes to retain their body heat in colder temperatures.

When purchasing a coat for your dog use the same good sense as you do when purchasing your own coat. Look for good construction. Wool and micro fiber fabric retain warmth. If you live in a climate that experiences cold winters look especially for materials made of wool and fleece. Be sure the coat covers the dog enough to keep him warm.

The coat should fit the dog comfortably around the neck, chest and armholes. Pay special attention to these areas and measurements when purchasing a coat. Coats don’t use stretch like a sweater does. Exact fit will be more important than when purchasing a sweater.

What is the cost of a good dog coat? Designer dog coats can cost several hundreds of dollars. A coat purchased at a large pet supply store of which there are many of the same, can retail for $20 or less. If you live in an area like, Boston, New York, Maine or Minnesota where the winters can sometimes become severe you probably should invest a little more money than $20. Although cost does not always mean quality, sometimes the best of materials used to construct the garment will cost a little more. So look over the coat carefully when you purchase and be sure it is the quality you want before paying the higher price.

Lycra body suits are available as an alternative to the traditional coats. Since the Lycra is stretchy material the product fits well on most dogs. The legs are built into the suit so the whole dog is covered securely. There are waterproof versions you can purchase for rainy climates. The Lycra suits are not quite as attractive as a faux fur or leather coat, but your dog will most likely love the warmth and comfort – sort of like you wearing a pair of sweats as opposed to tight fitting jeans!

Whoever would think that a raincoat would come in handy for a dog? They most certainly can be handy for your little dog. Short-coated little dogs can quickly become miserable in the rain, and like chilled to the bone. If you live in a rainy climate, your little dog would probably appreciate some sort of rain gear. As with all other dog fashions, the choices can be overwhelming, there are so many for us today.

Hats and hoods are just adorable on a dog, but especially adorable it seems on those little dogs. It is true that humans lose most of their heat from their heads. Dogs are not much different. A little hat or hood can also help your little dog to retain body heat in colder climates.

Purchase hats or hoods that attach firmly in place. A chin strap is helpful. The hat or hood should fit comfortably around the dog’s ears. Dogs have different sizes and shapes of heads, one size hat or hood does not fit all.

Now that your little dog is dressed perfectly for your particular climate, have fun strutting down your favorite walking trail!
