What About a Newfoundland Dog

April 3rd, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Ok, so everyone who stays on top of the show dog world knows that a Newfoundland won Best in Show at the Westminster Dog Show in 2004. That was a shock to many of the traditionalists who think that the smaller and more assertive dogs are the ideal and drool does not belong on the show floor. The win also caused an inflation in the price of Newfoundland puppies, which was bad for the average income household, but good for some operations. Despite the Westminster win, the Newfoundland breed was not elevated to the “Most Popular Breed” spot with the AKC. Which was a relief to many Newfoundland lovers who take to heart a deep responsibility for the well-being and protection of the breed.

So what is a Newfoundland dog all about? There are 3 main recognized color types of Newfoundland dog, also affectionately known as “newfs”, or “newfies”. They are Bronze, Black and Black/White (Landseer). Which color to choose from?

Unless you are going to dive into the serious side of breeding and showing, it doesn’t matter! Enjoy whatever color comes with your new, big, floppy bundle of happiness.

There is no base personality difference between the three color variations of Newfoundland dogs, however, some breeders will maintain that the Landseer is a breed unto itself and should be classified as such.

Newfoundland dogs are big, getting up to 150 pounds and more. They are not for everybody as they require a different level of care, more space and more companionship than the average sized dog. Contrary to what many may think, a newf will not eat you out of house and home. Their metabolism is slower and feeding them too much will compromise their health. A fat newfy is a very unhealthy newfy!

Their double layer coats require a regular grooming routine, and supplementing their chow with certain vitamins and minerals is recommended to help ward off some joint problems common to newfs.

Overall, anybody who is contemplating the addition of a Newfoundland dog into their home should keep in mind some of the following important points:

Thier coat is double layered and requires regular grooming to keep it healthy and clean. If you live in a part of the country where it gets just plain hot, make sure you are prepared to provide a comfortable environment for your well-coated friend.
Newfs love water. They love water so much that even their feet are webbed! This is a fact and should give a prospective owner an idea of which activity their new friend is best suited for - swimming. An active swimming session can be loads of fun for all and it’s well suited for their heavy body mass.
All crave the attention of their human partners, however, the Newfoundland goes beyond this a little in that they need to be around humans to stay healthy and happy. Newfoundland dogs were bred to be a constant companion and assistant to humans, particularly in the areas of water rescue and fishing along the coastal communities. It is in their genetic makeup to be partnered with humans. To kennel or chain a newf away from regular human contact would have the same emotional impact as if keeping a child confined in his room day after day.
A newf is a better house dog than even some of the toy dog varieties available today. Sure, when they bump into something it goes flying, but for the most part, a newf will adapt to house rules rather quickly and they learn to navigate gracefully around the home in short order.
Newfs drool, but it’s a happy drool! And besides, that’s what they make drool rags for. It’s really not that bad once you get into the swing of it.
Newfoundlands are the gentle giants of the canine world with couragous hearts of gold. Careful consideration should be taken when deciding to bring one into your family. They are family dogs and have a noble bearing along with a seeming awareness of their heritage and responsibilities. They deserve to be treated as a full member of the household and not relegated to the back yard, or worse, a chain and kennel run.

If you decide that a Newfoundland dog is for you and your family, and have the proper environment to accomodate a larger dog, then the next step is to look for a reputable breeder. Using the Internet to find a purebred Newfoundland can be risky. Keep in mind that a dedicated newf lover and breeder will be able to spout off a long list of ancestral information, medical history and will require an in-depth interview with you. Some breeders will refuse to airship a Newfoundland puppy, stipulating that you or a designee will need to personally pick the little fluffball up. If an online breeder is willing to just take your money and put the puppy on a plane, then you will be setting yourself up for the heartbreak of receiving a puppy bred for profit and not for soundness, health, or a long, happy life.

The first place to start looking for a Newfoundland is through your local Newfoundland dog club. If that is not available, then go online and visit the AKC or UKC. They will have a list of approved breeders in your state.

If you don’t care about papers, showing or breeding, then you may want to find out about adopting a Newfoundland from a rescue organization. The best site I’ve found to date which deals with just Newfoundland dog rescue can be found at newfrescue.com/RescueClubs.htm

Yes, it might be cool to own a newf, but, like all animals, they should not be considered a fad and disposable when out of favor. They are beautiful beings with an intelligent mind and kind soul who only ask for love, a few tasty morsels and lots of human companionship. In return, you will have a trusted family member, a dedicated worker, a protector and a warm friend to cuddle up to on cold winter nights. That is what a Newfoundland dog is all about.

Description & List of Popular Designer Dog Breeds

March 23rd, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

If you have been following the latest trends and changes in you may have come across the term “designer dogs”. These are, in fact, simply mixed breeds that are crossed to produce a specific physical appearance, usually easily identified as a cross between the two breeds. The breeders attempt to include only the desirable traits of the two parents while minimizing the chance of physical or health issues between the cross.

Some of the more common or popular designer dogs are:

· Labradoodle – a cross between a Labrador retriever and a Standard Poodle. Considered to have the non-shedding and easy care coat of a poodle combined with the poodle’s intelligence and the wonderful, loving personality of the Lab.

· Porkie – a cross between a Pug and a Yorkie. A small dog that is heartier than the standard Yorkie with longer hair and the easygoing temperament of the Pug.

· Cockapoo – a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle. Often considered an intelligent, low shedding small breed that is great for families.

· Schnoodle – cross between a Schnauzer and a Poodle, again with an attempt to have an intelligent, non-shedding companion dog.

· Daisy Dog – a three way cross between a poodle and Shih Tzu parent and a Bichon. These dogs are reported to be very calm and excellent companion dogs for traveling or living in small spaces.

· Poogle– cross between a poodle and a beagle. Small sized dog that energetic and easy to train.

· Puggle – Pug and a beagle. These are very friendly dogs that love to be involved in all aspects of the family.

Most of the designer dogs have a poodle in the mix simply because poodles are know to be excellent non-shedding dogs and also are very intelligent. The three different sizes of poodles also make them a great breed for mixing with various .

It is important to remember that these crosses have occurred in the past; it is just now that they are being recognized. As with all breeds of dogs there are good breeding dogs and dogs that should not be crossed due to health conditions or temperaments.

A designer dog, also called a hybrid, is not recognized by the Kennel Clubs, although many agencies are trying to develop registries for these breeds. Be aware that many of these dogs are more expensive than either one of their purebred parents, but do not have any standing with breed registries. Many shelter dogs are mixed breeds that are looking for a loving home and are available at a fraction of the cost that some breeders are asking.

Designer dogs may also have a variety of health concerns and conditions. Do not mistakenly believe that all hybrids are naturally healthy and immune from genetic conditions, in fact they may have just as many health concerns as purebred dogs. Be sure to check the temperament of the parents, and choose a breed that is one you really want, not just the “trendy” dog of the day.

Purebred Dog Breeding Today

October 12th, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

The breeding of purebred dogs today has become very complex and even in many breeds of dogs there are many different breeding lines that produce different type and traits of dogs within the same breed of dog. This has come about due to breeders personel likes and dislikes of a certain types, sizes or colors but every breeder of purebred dogs needs to remember that breed of standard. Does your dog have its true breed characteristics? Does your dog appear to look like what its breed books say it should look like? Does it compare to picture of of dogs of its breed of old or of famous dogs bred in its breed? Finally does it have the true temperment for the breed you own? Last but not least is your dog of sound healthy breeding lines?

These are all question any breeder or some one thinking of breeding dog should ask themself before they undertake the job of breeding any litter of puppies in any breed of dog. If you can answer all the questions above and you have done at leat some research in your breed of dog and the bloodlines you are working with and do know what traits your bloodline has, what the sire and dam look like, the grandsire and granddam and further back great sires and dams in your dogs pedigree. The next thing on your mind should be what are you trying to improve on and what are you trying to keep in your breed of dog.

There are three main breeding methods of breeding dogs or purebreds, line breeding, out crossing and inbreeding. There are many good books out there on breeding of dogs and I am not trying to rewirte any of them in this writing, rather I am trying to get you as a breeder of dogs to think, read and questions what you doing and wear you going with your breeding program. I will discuss shortly the three ways of breeding purebred dogs as to only lay fourth a guide to breeding better dogs and keeping some type of constant format to produce dogs that closely look like each other, have the same traits, temperments and are sound healthy dogs. Lets us simply discuss them shortly and see if I can get you thinking and looking at the way you are breeding your dogs.

Lets talk out cross breeding - This type of breeding is seen a lot in were none related dogs who are bred out none related stock are bred together and in your dogs pedigree. This type of breeding will not produce good dogs of the same type, quality and soundness. Breeding dogs this way only leads to many uncertain factors and can bring in many things a breeder is unaware of or even make it impossiable to pin point were a trait or problem have come from. Out cross breedings should be done by very experienced breeders only looking to correct a fault or make a certain improvement in there dogs and than the breeder must be sure the dog or bitch they are using carries this trait themself and the line they were bred down from does carry this trait or improvement for at least the last three generations in there line or pedigree for it to have any effect on result in making the desire changes, after this these dogs from the out cross are usually bred back into the main breeding line. Out cross breeding should not be done by new breeders or new comers to any breed and out cross breeding is no way to start a breeding program when trying to produce constant type, temperment and soundness in your dogs. Even long time breeders have made mistakes when out crossing and it is the fastest way to change type, temperment and soundness in any breeding program in any breed of dog. I allways recommend you to educate yourself, know your breed of dog, do some generation research and at leat learn basic genetic knowledge or do some reading before you begin to bred any breed of dog. Also seek the help of other sucessful breeders in your breed of dog that have been around awhile, most good breeders are willing to help and give advice to all novice dog breeders and new comers.

Lets talk about Line Breeding - Line breeding is the breeding of related dogs bred down from a certain breeding line of dogs. Many breeders think line breeding is close breeding of related dogs and it should be avoided. Nothing is farther from the truth. Good line breeding will produce your best dogs who will in return produce even better dogs if done right. Line breeding will give you much higher constant results producing dogs of the same type, size, quality, traits and temperments. That is if the breeder is starting out with everything being good and the line there breeding back into is good with all things they want in there breed of dog. Line breeding will quickly show a breeder just how good the line of dogs they are working with is but line breeding will also show the breeder any faults or problems they may have in there breeding program. There are many formulas for line breeding and these are discuss in many good books on , there are differnt degree’s of line breeding as well. So it is not my attenion to go inot all these formulas here. However two which have proven very sucessufl to me over the years are when you breed a grand dauther to her dams sire, (i.e. grandsire) this does require some advanced planning and does require both dogs to be of very high quality with all the good traits you want and within there breeds standard. Half borther and half sister breeding with a out cross line in the middle of there pedigree has also proven very good results if the dogs used are of very good quality, sound and have great temperments. Line breeding does require knowledge and research. Its is allways recommended that you due this before any breeding of dogs. Line breeding in most cases will produce you better and higher quality of dogs in any breed as long as you are starting out with very good bred stock of the breed of dog you are trying to breed. Line breeding has been proven by many top breeders and top kennels around the world as one of the best ways to produce better dogs.

Lets talk about Inbreeding - Inbreeding is the very close breeding of line bred stock to each other. Example of this are litter brother to litter sister, Sire to daughter, or mother to son, etc. This type of breeding should never be done by most. Some very expereienced breeders may on occasion pull a inbreeding to set in a trait or type but than the breeding of these dogs down from this point must be used carefully and within the aims for which they were bred for. Inbreeding is only for very knowledgeable long time breeders to even under take as this type of breeding will truely intact the good traits as well as bring out any bad traits or problem to a very high degree. Inbreeding has however produce some very great top quality dogs who have in return produce other very high quality dogs however many inbreedings due results in breeders have to put down many puppies also and it is not for the weak at heart. Inbreeding is not a recommended form of breeding dogs expect in certain very experience breeders programs, usually done one time only for that one purpose.

The breeding of purebred dogs should not be taken lightly, and every breeder should always try to gain as much knowledge as they can on there breed of dog, its type, breed standard, soundness and health not for getting its true temperment. Keeping this in mind and do your reseach as a dog breeder it will insure that you breed better and healthy dogs for many years to come. After all breeding prue bred dogs is a true art form and breeding better dogs should always be you goal. Don’t purchase you next dog from just anyone, seek out a good breeder of that breed of dog you want who has been around and breeding for a while. You will be much happier with your puppy purchase and so will your puppy and dog be happier and healthy for many more years to come. Today most good breeder also offer health guarantee’s on puppies they sell and good breeders stand behind there dogs because they know what has gone into producing them.

Do you reseach, read about your breed, talk to breeders, you will be glad you did!

Pitbull Breeders

January 4th, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Pit Bulls are definitely the most sold and purchased breed of dog in America. Pit Bulls, or more specifically the American Pit Bull Terriers, are still preferred by Americans for their agility, strength and faithfulness, in spite of the recent bad press.

Pit Bull breeders are usually well-equipped with the knowledge of genetics and the technique of . Pit Bull Terriers may be bred to be silver, blue or the rarer merle colored; or they could be bred to have blue glassy eyes or red noses. Its a mix and match process to produce qualities that may be desirable enough to fetch a huge price. This kind of breeding is called show breeding.

Breeders widely advertise their puppy and adult Pit Bull dogs on the net. The rarer the dog, the higher the price. Blue coated dogs and merle coats are much in demand. Plus, there are seasonal trends that buyers look out for in Pit Bulls like wide mouths, shorter statures or drooping cheeks. A merle or a blue puppy could fetch something like $5000.

However there are some Pit Bull breeders who breed their dogs to be more aggressive and tenacious so that they could be used in dogfights. Bets are laid on dogs in these events and though this is an objected activity, it still goes on discreetly. When a breeding farm labels its dog as ‘game-bred’, it means that the dog has been bred specially to fight. This nefarious activity has brought several dog breeders a lot of heat.

Breeders also provide studs for mating. Studs are male dogs that mate with female dogs to produce sturdy puppies. People who breed their dogs with hired studs in their backyards do what is known as backyard breeding.

Breeders also provide other products that may make dogs more agile, increase their reproductive abilities, increase their stamina, etc. Most of these products work on dogs in the same manner as steroids work on humans.

Animal lovers generally hold dog breeders in contempt. According to them, is something that is against the rules of nature, and is of course injustice done to dogs. Breeding a dog just for its color, or eyes, or some other trait is considered to be cruel. Some breeding farms inject their dogs with vitalizers that increase their libido. These vitalizers often interfere with the hormonal balances in the animals. Also, while hybridizing breeds of dogs, the individuality of the breed is lost. It is more gracious to opt for a rescue Pit Bull than to buy a dog that has been bred to pander to the sensibilities of humans.

How To Find A Puggle Dog

December 31st, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

For those of you who don’t know what a ” Puggle ” is, a puggle is a mix-breed dog in which a pug dog is bred with a beagle.
Puggles have been the biggest rage in Hollywood as well as lovers alike.

Many ask where to find a good puggle dog and we have some good puggle answers. Puggles belong to the family of mixed breed dogs known as Designer Dogs and are often very expensive if bought at a pet shop. The problem with just buying these dogs from a pet shop is that there are many great mixed breed dogs that can easily be found at your local animal shelter or humane society.

I recently inquired about finding such dogs at a local shelter and they will even take down a wish-list of the type of dog you would like, so when your puggle shows up (or any other dog for that matter), you will be promptly notified. This is definitely a very humane method that gets overlooked often. Many upon many dog lovers have found their best companion from a animal shelter in which they would have been doomed for sure.

If you need a puggle puppy for sale quicker, check the paper, check the pet stores, check specific breeders of puggles but always remember to learn about their genetic history first.

A common problem that often exist is that people who are not commonly breeders will try to mate a pug and beagle without knowing anything about and with little information. What often ends up happening as a result, the puggle will often have genetic disorders and problems as they get older. Another thing that many unskilled dog breeders overlook is temperment testing and finding the right mix to come out right. Puggle dogs are great animals and like any great animal they should be bred with respect and dignity.

It may seem like a contridiction in terms jumping from a animal shelter view to a qualified breeder view, but it all depends on the needs of the buyer. I personally would never want to see a love capable dog be put to sleep, however you do want a that will be with you quite a long time. It is a catch 22 I guess.

Puggle breeders are often very trained breeders who take pride in breeding a very nice puppy. Much controversy has been brought up from purebred owners in claims that puggles are simply a mutt. This is somewhat true however Puggle dogs can be well bred like any other dog plus have less of a tendency to be inbred due to overbreeding. This makes a smarter dog with less emotional problems often times.

One thing is for certain though, puggle puppies are cute! Puggle puppies are sooo incredibley cute that they touch the hearts of all they come in counter with.
