Pet Doors Makes Pet Owners Life Easier

September 8th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Going home from the office with a day full of accomplishments makes you want to rest in a comfy couch as a reward for job well done. Upon entering your house you see a pile of pet waste in your expensive Persian carpet and more than a hundred deep scratches in your white door’s paint job; which makes your idea of peace frustrating. These are some situations that are a major bummer. If you’re having a problem with your pet unattended in your house then you might want to consider buying a pet door and an invisible fence which will enable your dog to go outside whenever he need to take a poop, while an invisible fence restrict their freedom from places that are dangerous to them.

Pet doors give your pet a sense of freedom to roam around your house and in the backyard, especially your dog who always want to see who enters the gate and your cat that will find a way whenever it wants to go outside. Not to mention the damage that dogs and cats do when they are being restricted from getting out.

In buying a pet door you should consider the following:

The Size of Your Pet:To get the right size for your pet measure their height and width. Don’t forget to consider your pet’s breed; if it is a large breed dog then choose a dog door that your dog can fit even if it becomes an adult, same goes for cats in buying a cat door.

The Citronella Dog Collar - A Natural Way For Controlling A Dog’s Barking

August 23rd, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

In this article we will look at a more natural way of controlling a dog’s barking compared to the more usual system of shock collars. We are particularly going to look at the citronella dog collar as a more effective type of dog bark collar. In research carried out it has been found that the citronella dog collar is twice as effective as many other types of dog bark collars that are available especially the shock versions. This efficiency is put down to the use of the citronella solution which is present in the collar.

So when it comes to calming that “nuisance barking dog” then a spritz of fragrance under the chin has often been found to be more effective than an electronic shock. This is was found after various tests were carried out by the Animal Behavior Clinic at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine. In fact in a report carried in the American Animal Hospital Association Journal of May-June 1996 they found owners who tried the two types of anti-barking collar available preferred the citronella version to the electric shock version.

The citronella dog collar contains a reservoir of citronella solution and will spray a small amount at the dog’s face when they commence barking. It is not only considered a humane way of dealing with nuisance barking but in studies carried out it is reported to be 88% effective. However, there is one drawback to be had from using this type of collar and that is the sensitivity of the microphone contained within it. So the microphone is there to trigger the spray at the sound of the dog’s bark, but unfortunately it has been found that other noises can set off the collar, which will result in a dog being sprayed even when it hasn’t barked. Also there have been cases when a dog has realized that the reservoir containing the citronella solution is empty and so commenced barking again.

So if you happen to be looking for a more effective way of controlling your dog’s nuisance barking then a citronella dog collar may be the right choice for you. Especially if you are looking for a more humane way of dealing with the problem.

Dog Comfort, Safety and Fashion with Collars and Leashes

July 31st, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Dog collars are practical and fashionable. A dog collar can hold your dog’s identification which can be his ticket back home to you if he gets lost. A dog collar can also be your dog’s most fashionable statement showing the world just how pampered and stylish he is.

Every dog needs at least one collar. But as it is with you and earrings or necklaces and rings, your dog and you will enjoy having several. Of course, you only really need one pair of shoes, but chances are you have many, a style and color for every occasion. So can it be the same with your dog’s collar. You and your dog can enjoy a color and style for any and every occasion.

The dogs that belong to celebrities are known to wear some of the most fabulous-looking collars. The rich and famous love to splurge on fashionable collars for their dogs.

Throughout history people have adorned their dog’s necks with jewels, brass and velvet. We are not the first generation to love our dogs. A dog-collar museum at Leeds Castle in England displays a collection of collars from medieval times to the nineteenth century. Many of those collars include the same kind of identification information we put on our dog tags today.

The collars you choose for you dog should provide comfort and safety as well as adornment. A collar that does not fit properly can create sores. A collar that is too loose can allow your dog to slip out. A collar that is not sturdy can break just at a time you need it most to be strong enough to hold your dog in safety. Finding the right fit is the first rule when purchasing collars for your dog.

Do not put a huge collar and leash on a little dog. It can irritate your dog’s throat. The little guys under 8 pounds should have a collar that is 3/8-inch wide. Bigger dogs can use a collar 5/8-inch in size.

If you have a bigger and more active dog be sure the collar is strong. If your bigger dog suddenly flies to the end of the leash after a cat while on your walk, you will be glad he was wearing a very strong collar and leash. Once I was walking one of my 10 pound Shih Tzu’s on a sidewalk that surrounded a lake. The ducks on the sidewalk suddenly flew into the water, and right after them went my Cindy and almost me too. Without a strong collar and leash that day she would have ended up in the lake for sure (I am unsure if Cindy can swim), but my first instinct would have been to run right after her and I for sure cannot swim. Luckily I was able to pull her back.

Look for well-constructed buckles and collars made of leather or other materials that won’t fall apart right at the “wrong” moment.

Be sure your dog’s collar is secure around his neck. Otherwise he could learn to get his head out of the collar. Put your thumb or other fingers inside the collar. If you can fit more than one finger comfortably between collar and your dog’s neck, the collar on a small dog is too loose. Collar fitting can also be determined by the size of your dog’s head. If your dog has a big neck and a little head, the collar has to be fitted snug around his neck. If he has a skinny neck and a large head, the collar can be looser.

Whether you pay $5 or $100 for your dog’s collars, think about quality, comfort and safety before you buy. It is fun to find stylish collars, but just be sure your dog is comfortable and safe as well.

Considerations When Training Your Dog

July 12th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

The mantra of seasoned pet trainers is to begin to train your dog at an early age. They say that good dogs are made, not born, and that if you wish to stack the cards in your favor, then pick a quiet, docile to begin with. Some dogs are more outgoing, loud, tense, and scatty than others. Dogs have different levels of friendliness and noise. Some dogs bark loudly, and often, as a consistent feature, and for other breeds, it turns out be an anomaly. So, the first step is choosing a dog that, all other desires considered, is relatively quiet, responsive, and friendly around humans. The second step is in purchasing or acquiring it an early age so that you can begin to train your dog before adolescence and adulthood. Well-behaved dogs are made, not born, so here are some tips on how to get there successfully:

Consistency on your part is critical. Repetition and rewards are two must-have items in your tool kit. Always punish a bad or unwanted behavior and always reward a positive behavior. Since the dog has no way of knowing that it’s better to pee outside than on the newly-cleaned Persian rug, you must take the necessary steps to contain, punish, and reward your dog. For example, pat your dog on the head for coming when you call him, or give him a doggie treat. Tap him under the jaw or on the nose and say, “No!” or “Wrong!” when he does something wrong. If need be, when housebreaking, crate off a little portion of the house so that the dog doesn’t pee everywhere. At least the mess will be contained. Always take your dog outside when he shows signs of needing to use the bathroom like crouching, whimpering, or pacing. It’s absolutely necessary that you keep your attitude consistent when training your dog. Never take out your anger on your dog or reward negative behavior by accident, i.e., when you’re in a good mood. Repetition with reward - over a long time period - achieves results.

Some pet owners prefer electronic to reduce barking and noise. It’s advisable that this option be understood properly so it’s not open to abuse. Always keep it on a low level; if barking and whimpering occur, it’s probably on a too high of a setting. Some collars emit unpleasant, inaudible noises instead. This method should be used in succession with a long leash. If the dog refuses to come in, it’s advisable to pull him back in. Reeling your dog back in can save him from the dangers of the street - cars, children, other dogs, and angry teens. If you’re feeling tense about using a device like this, consider that hitting your dog or dragging him in by the collar are bad too.

Your dog can live happily together with your family if you just begin to train your dog well!
